Berta Sigarreta Blanco, 98, of Chicago, Illinois, passed away January 27, 2023, at the Illinois Masonic Hospital of Chicago. She was born in Mayari, Cuba, to Mariano and Eloina on July 4th. 1924. She graduated from Law School in Santiago de Cuba and worked as a lawyer until the early years after the Cuban revolution. Because of her disagreement with the new government, she resigned her position and directed her professional career into other areas. She was always against the totalitarian and communist regime, that on January 1st. 1959 swept away freedom, civil rights and democracy from her beloved homeland. Her dearest wish was to see her country free, but unfortunately, she could not live to see it. In the late 80s, she emigrated to the United States, where she worked as a teacher at Mason Elementary School in the southside of Chicago and retired at the age of 72. She loved this country and this city as much as she loved Cuba and always enjoyed every single day of her life. She never had children, but in return she always had a family who loved her incommensurate and took care of her until her last breath. Her legacy is countless, but can be resumed in these words: tenderness, hard work, high spirits, honesty, compassion, and true love. Her smiling face and joyful personality will never be forgotten by her family and those who had the luck of meeting her during her journey on this earthly life. Bon Voyage, my beloved aunt! We will always miss you! May your soul be in peace and your spirit dwells forever in the kingdom of God!
