On July 18, 2025, Esther C. Moky passed away at age 83. The daughter of Verna (Frost) and Evan Thorgersen, she was a north-side Chicago native and lifelong resident. Esther was born and baptized at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church and later attended business school and worked for General Motors Co. On Aug. 12, 1967, she married the love of her life, Wayne W. Moky at Christ Church, where their love story began. They worked together to provide a wonderful life for their family until Wayne’s passing in 2000.
Esther was the mother of three children, Kristine (William), Heather (Scott) and Kara (Christopher). She was a domestic engineer extraordinaire and the central figure in the lives of her children. She will be remembered as the best producer of handmade Halloween costumes and banana bread, a sporting fan and the leader of many Michigan summer adventures. She also was a skilled seamstress; if you were the recipient of a Christmas stocking, you know you have something special.
She was a cherished cookie maker to her 8 grandchildren: Kailey Cordova, Emily Stross, Ethan Stross, Connor Lavin, Emily Cordova, Tyler Walz, Keegan Lavin and Annika Cordova.
Esther was the most enthusiastic treat supplier for her three grand-dogs, Pongo, Meesa and Bodhi. Previously loved were George, Missy, Maude and Latsch.
Since 1980, summers have been spent with her family in Beulah, Mich. Time at the cottage evolved into a family tradition full of fond memories and longstanding friendships. She was a volunteer for the local Meals on Wheels program and a member of The Grange sewing-quilting group.
In the “off-season,” Esther regularly played Canasta, traveled and enjoyed staying in touch with lifelong school friends. She also was a staple volunteer at Christ Church, Varblomman Children's Club, Albany Park Community Center Food Pantry and the Swedish American Museum. She made more Swedish pancake batter than you could imagine. Later, she decided to return to the workforce at Target Corp., where she eventually retired.
Throughout her life, Esther took many special trips with her family, such as visiting relatives in Agger, Denmark, with her three daughters in 2019. She greatly cherished her Scandinavian heritage and family connections.
She loved visiting her children in various locations, where there was always a special project waiting for her, such as making 100 Halloween candy giveaways or supporting numerous military deployments. Esther never declined an adventure and lived life to the fullest.
Through her illness, she was thankful for the care she received. Outstanding helpers include her personal caregivers and the nursing and dining staff at the Carrington.
Esther would say that she had a life of many blessings that was grounded on faith and family. Her family grieves her loss but takes comfort knowing that Esther and Wayne are together again.
A service to celebrate Esther’s life will be held at 2:30pm on Saturday, Sept. 13, 2025, at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3253 W. Wilson, Chicago, IL 60625 led by Pastor Tom Terrell. Prior to that time, the family will receive condolences from 1pm to 2:30pm in the fellowship hall in the basement of the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Christ Church Basement Refurbishment Project in memory of Esther Moky. This is where many memories of her fellowship will remain cherished. Memorials may be sent to Christ Church, 3253 W. Wilson, Chicago, IL, 60625 or may be made online at https://christchurchchicago.org/donate
