Julia Henriques, who passed away on November 29, 2023, was born in Wales, United Kingdom. She grew up on the family farm in the Cotswolds, and was educated at Seven Springs School and Cranbourne Chase School. She then also attended the University of Madrid where she learned fluent Spanish. She took to Spanish life with typical enthusiasm and after university she worked for several years for a British bank in Madrid.
After a spell working in London she came to Chicago as a banker in international trade finance, beginning at the First National Bank of Chicago and then Bank of Montreal. Post-banking, she found her true life’s work as a managing editor and co-founder of Dogs Naturally Magazine, working to promote better health for dogs.
Julia was an avid sportswoman. As a teen, she was a champion horse rider and went to Japan with the British Pony Club Eventing team. As an adult, she ran in 6 marathon races and three triathalons. She was a skilled skier and medalist in the national NASTAR ski racing championships. She enjoyed winters in Taos, New Mexico, where she someday hoped to build a home on a plot she purchased in 2022.
Julia loved dogs passionately. She rescued and adopted five Samoyeds: Muddy, Willie, Tarka, Omar, and Otis. Her meandering walks round her Chicago neighborhood, in which the dogs were allowed to choose the route, and her outgoing nature, introduced her to many people and she was a loved local figure.
Julia is survived by her partner of 38 years, Chicago attorney Marc Janser, and her brothers Mark, Jack and George Henriques, who are all in some way still attached to the farm where Julia was raised.
Julia was a loving, kind, compassionate woman who was adored by many, many people. She is deeply mourned by the Janser and Henriques families and by all who knew her. We will all miss her so much.
