Rafael Buenaflor, of Chicago, Illinois, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on May 30, 2026, at the age of 96, surrounded by the love of his family. He shared his home and life with his beloved wife of 59 years, Norma, and their daughter, Claire.
Rafael was born on October 24, 1929, in Iloilo, Philippines, to Faustino and Rafaela Buenaflor. He valued hard work, perseverance, and education throughout his life. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1964, a milestone that reflected his determination and dedication to building a better future.
Rafael and Norma built a marriage founded on devotion, respect, and unwavering support. In February 1971, Rafael came to the United States, where he worked hard to provide for his family and create a life filled with love, stability, and opportunity.
Rafael worked for Coca-Cola as a maintenance mechanic, where he was respected for his strong work ethic, reliability, and skill. After many years of dedicated service, he retired with the admiration of colleagues and friends.
Above all, Rafael was a devoted husband and father. He was selfless, humble, and deeply kind-hearted, always placing the needs of others before his own. He found joy in caring for his family and quietly helping those around him. Well known and well liked in his neighborhood, Rafael's friendly, outgoing nature and warm smile made others feel welcome and valued. Family, friends, neighbors, and all who knew him will remember him for his generosity, compassion, and genuine interest in others.
Rafael was preceded in death by his parents, Faustino and Rafaela Buenaflor; his brother, Juan Buenaflor; and his sister, Dionisia Buenaflor Vargas.
Rafael is survived by his beloved wife of 59 years, Norma; his cherished daughter, Claire; and many relatives and friends whose lives were enriched by his kindness and friendship.
Rafael's life was a testament to love, sacrifice, humility, and quiet strength. Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 4, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with a Prayer Service at 6:30 PM, at Benson Family Funeral Home, 3224 W. Montrose Ave., Chicago. Final viewing will be held on Friday, June 5, from 9:30 AM to 10:15 AM at the funeral home. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 AM at Our Lady of Mercy Church, Chicago. Interment will follow at Maryhill Catholic Cemetery, Niles.
